Utpal Garain is a Professor at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Calcutta, and Head of the Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) Unit and ISI Centre for AI and Machine Learning (CAIML). He completed his Bachelor and Master's in Computer Science and Engineering from Jadavpur University in 1994 and 1997, and earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Indian Statistical Institute in 2005. His research focuses on AI systems, machine learning, deep learning, and their applications in language, vision-based analytics. With over 150 research papers in peer-reviewed venues and 12 patents, Prof. Garain's contributions are recognized with esteemed awards like the Young Engineer Award by the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) in 2006, the Indo-US Science and Technology Forum Research Fellowship in 2011, and the JSPS Fellowship by the Japanese Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS) in 2017. Prof. Garain is elected as a fellow of INAE (2023) and the West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology (2024).
