Dr. Arup Ranjan Mukhopadhyay is working as a faculty [Senior Technical Officer (Professor Grade)] in the SQC & OR Division of the Indian Statistical Institute, for more than 36 years, which involves applied research, teaching (essentially in the M.Tech. (QROR) curriculum of ISI), training and consultancy in the field of Quality Management and Operations Research. He had been elected to the Council, which is the highest policy and decision making body in ISI, as the Head, SQC & OR Division, for 2020-2022. He has published many papers in renowned national and international journals. He has a B.Tech. in Textile Technology with First Class in 1983 from the Government College of Engineering and Textile Technology, affiliated to Calcutta University, a Post-Graduate Diploma in SQC & OR in 1985 from Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) and two-year Specialist Development Fellowship Program from ISI in 1989. He has obtained Ph.D. (Engineering) from Jadavpur University in 2007 in the area of Quality Engineering and Six Sigma. He is a Certified Lead Assessor for assessing the implementation of the Quality Management System (QMS) in an organization in line with the requirements of ISO-9000 QMS. He has so far successfully guided five students for Ph.D. work in the field of Total Quality Management with an emphasis on higher education and other service sectors (Debaprayag Chaudhuri, Jadavpur University), Lean Six Sigma (Ashoke Sarkar, Jadavpur University, who happens to be a colleague in the SQC & OR Unit, Mumbai, ISI), Environmental Engineering (Tarun Kumar Roy, Jadavpur University), Statistical Process Control (Sandeep, Indian Statistical Institute), Lean and Green Management (Raktim Dasgupta, Jadavpur University). Raktim Dasgupta passed M.Tech. (QROR) from ISI in 2015. The details of his PhD guidance are provided in the following table.

Apart from teaching and research, Dr. Mukhopadhyay has worked extensively in the industry-academia interface for providing consultancy and training to the engineers, technologists, scientists and executives in design, development and implementation of Quality, Reliability and Operations Research systems including promotional activities, project work, case studies, industrial research & development and servicing of plants. Before joining ISI he had worked for six months as Production Engineer in Yarn Manufacturing at Kalyani Spinning Mills Ltd (A WB Govt Undertaking) and as SQC-in-Charge for one year in 1986 in the Jayashree Textiles Ltd., Rishra, West Bengal, a unit of the Aditya Birla Group.
