Ph. D. Thesis Title:
Mapping
Quantitative Trait Loci in Humans: Some Statistical Contributions.
Thesis Advisor:
Dr. Partha Pratim Majumder
Summary of Thesis:
Some computationally simple and statistically efficient procedures have
been developed to map quantitative trait loci (QTL) in humans. An extensive overview of past studies
on QTL mapping techniques has been presented. An EM algorithm coupled with Bayesian classification
technique of mapping QTLs has been developed. Some existing procedures
(Jayakar 1970, Haseman and Elston 1972)
have been extended to the case of epistatically interacting multiple trait loci
and insights into the marginal effects of various trait parameters have been
obtained. A robust semi-parametric two-stage genome-wide scan method using sib-pair data
has been proposed and has been shown to be more efficient compared to a currently used method
(Olson 1995). Methods for deciphering the genetic architecture of a multivariate phenotype have been
discussed by studying the correlation structure of the phenotype. Simulation data have been
used to assess the performance of the proposed procedures.
Post Doctoral Advisor:
Dr. Theodore Reich
Project:
I was a participant in the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism Project
(COGA) and was involved in the linkage mapping of quantitative endophenotypes like
electroencephalogram (EEG) waves and externalizing scores. I continue to
collaborate in the ongoing project.
