What you absolutely must know before daring to enter Salt
Lake!
- Roads in Salt Lake have no names! In fact, some of them
do. But the road names are not used in addresses, and few
residents are aware of the names. So if you ask a resident about
how to get to the crossing of 2nd avenue and 5-th cross road, you
could as well ask your question in Japanese!
- Salt Lake is divided into various blocks that are named with
two letters, like AA or DF. Roughly speaking the first letter
increases from east to west, while the second letter increases
from north to south.
- Officially Salt Lake addresses take one of three forms
- Like AH 108, meaning house no. 108 of block AH. Most
residential addresses are of this type.
- Like A-22 Digantika, AH block, meaning flat no. A-22 of the
appartment complex Digantika situated in the AH block.
- Government offices are usually located by the name of the
building like Bikash Bhavan, Poura Bhavan etc.
- Water tanks play the role of landmarks all throughout Salt
Lake. So whenever you hear about a location in Salt Lake try to
learn which is its nearest water tank. Residents as well as bus
conductors and auto drivers know the tank locations quite well.
